Bryant Park’s public restroom just received 3rd place in Cinta’s America’s Best Restrooms Competition for 2010! Meet Khadijah Steven, 3o- year-old bathroom attendant from Bedford-Stuyvestant, Brooklyn- and one of the brave souls who help make this possible.
For four months, she has worked nine hours a day making sure the bathroom is at its best. Certified in Commercial Cooking from the Career Academy of New York, Steven grew tired of line cooking at places like Golden Crest Restaurant and decided to work handing out Metro newspapers at the Bryant Park station. She soon jumped at an opening to work as the bathroom attendant for the park, but it wasn’t so easy. She was second in line and had to wait for the opportunity to open when the first pick left. Her perseverance paid off- she’s enjoyed cleaning the restroom and takes great pride in it’s cleanliness. However, she continues to have the dream of one day owning a restaurant of her own:
“I don’t want to work for anyone anymore, I want to open up my own restaurant,” she said. “I like it here, but I want to open the door to my own place for once.”
